COMMERCIAL FARMING IN AFRICA ( REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN )

I have been invited by individuals and communities in South Sudan to join hands with them and engage in commercial farming there. Areas under offer range from 1,500 to 10,000 hectares, allowing for a minimum of 1,000 hectares to be cultivated. Target crops will be maize, wheat, sorghum, millet, soya bean, cow pea, groundnut and cotton and initially focused for the domestic market, including value adding at source.
Investor(s) / partner(s) are sought to kickstart this venture and allow it to grow and develop, through debt and or equity options on favourable terms. At this juncture the funds are required to undertake further evaluation of the properties, to establish a local company and to transfer the land titles to the company on long term lease and payment of annual rent. The business will then build up solid proposals for the project to raise the necessary funds for large scale mechanized farming through specialist equity funds with a focus on investment in Africa and in the agribusiness sector. At present, such anticipated funding requirement is in the region of ��£500 K to ��£ 1 million. It is a chicken and egg situation insofar that funds are available, but only with lands in hand and a sound plan - which can only be drawn once the potential is defined and enumerated.
I have over thirty years professional experience in Africa being involved with commercial agriculture, agricultural & rural development, natural resource management and consider I have the appropriate skill sets and knowledge to be an effective business manager for this undertaking. The republic of South Sudan is Africa’s newest State. It has the potential to be the breadbasket for the region and for the Horn of Africa. South Sudan is approximately 660,000 Km 2 ( 1/3 rd the size of Western Europe ) and a population of between 8 to 9 million; Much of this land mass is suitable for agriculture, and is capable of double cropping in the Equatoria States and year round with irrigation in many other parts. I wish to farm in a viable, sustainable and profitable manner, with the inclusion of the communities for benefits that can accrue, such as provision of extension services, inputs and machinery hire for their own farming activities and to augment overall farm production. The farm(s) will serve as centres of excellence and a nucleus that can spread best agricultural practice to the Nation. In short a business with social responsibility.
